3 tips for cooking with kids

3 tips for cooking with kids

Small hands can be surprisingly useful in the kitchen. But, if you’re cooking with kids, the process is likely to be a little different to how you usually prepare meals. If you want to get your kids cooking and have fun in the process, make sure you follow these three tips…

    1. Take your time: When you’re cooking with kids, everything will take twice as long as usual. So, set aside extra time and make sure nobody is hungry when you start.
    2. Expect mess: Kids love the process of cooking as much as the meal itself. Throwing hands in dough and stirring vigorously are great fun, but they’re messy things to do. To help keep the mess under control, buy a plastic tablecloth for the prep area and cover the floor.
    3. Make it a learning experience: Cooking is the perfect learning opportunity for kids. You can talk to them about cooking techniques, work on their maths skills by weighing and improve their coordination. But, it’s vital you teach them about safety, too. Showing them how hot a cooker can be and how it works is crucial for preventing accidents. It will also make them more confident in the future.

By getting your fussy little eaters in the kitchen, you’ll turn them into little chefs who love tasting their own handiwork. So, if you’re thinking of cooking with your kids, why not try one of these fun and easy recipes?

    To serve

    • Grated cheese

    Ingredients

    For the base

    • 300g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting
    • 1 tsp instant yeast
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tbsp olive oil

    For the tomato sauce

    • 1 tbsp olive oil, plus a drizzle
    • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
    • 200ml passata

    Method

    1. Adults: Tip the flour, yeast and salt into a bowl. Then, make a well in the centre and add 200ml of warm (not hot) water and the oil.
    2. Kids: Roll up your sleeves and stir the mixture until you have a soft but fairly wet dough.
    3. Adults: Tip the dough out onto a floured surface. Then, knead the dough for five minutes until it’s smooth (your child may be able to help with this if you show them the technique).
    4. Kids: Cover the dough with a tea towel and leave it to prove for an hour. You’ll know it has finished proving because it will have doubled in size.
    5. Adults: While the dough is proving, make the tomato sauce. Add your oil to a frying pan, briefly fry the garlic (without letting it brown) and add the passata. Leave to simmer until it thickens a little. Then, leave it to cool.
    6. Adults: Quickly knead the dough to knock it back and then tip it onto a floured surface. Cut the mixture into two balls and roll out each ball into a large teardrop that is very thin and about 25cm across.
    7. Adults: Preheat your oven to 240°C/220°C fan assisted/Gas Mark 9 with a large baking sheet inside.
    8. Kids: Decorate your pizza on top of a baking sheet. Do this by smoothing over the sauce with a spoon and then adding your toppings.
    9. Adults: Put the pizza, still on its baking sheet, on top of the hot sheet in the oven and bake for 8-10 mins until crisp.
