Easy Recipes for Kids

Teaching kids to cook doesn’t have to be challenging. It can be fun, exciting and extremely educational. Whether you want to inspire your little ones to be more creative with their food or you want to encourage them to eat their greens, cooking and baking together are brilliant activities for the whole family.

You don’t need a huge kitchen to hold a big cooking class either. Our range cookers come in different sizes to suit your needs. Here are some quick and easy recipes for kids, including healthy kid-friendly recipes to get them enjoying their fruits and vegetables.

Vanilla sugar sprinkle cookies

There are so many easy baking recipes for kids out there, but this has to be one of our favourites. It’s great for using up basic cupboard ingredients before they expire, and these cookies look incredibly fun and colourful, making them perfect for birthday parties. At Christmas or Easter time, you can even package them up in cellophane bags and give them to friends and family.

Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of flour (sifted)
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 230g of unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp of salt
  • Rainbow sprinkles

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour and salt, and mix thoroughly.
  2. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light in colour and fluffy - this is best with an electric mixer - then add the egg and vanilla and continue beating for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the flour and salt mix into the main bowl and continue beating on a low speed until combined (but avoid over mixing).
  4. Take a bit of the dough to roll out a 1-inch ball. Continue until all the dough is rolled into balls. Place the sprinkles onto a dish and roll the balls in the sprinkles until fully covered.
  5. Line a baking tray with grease proof paper and place the balls on there with at least 2 inches for spacing. Then transfer the tray to the freezer and freeze for 30 minutes (or until firm).
  6. In a preheated oven, bake for 14 minutes at 200°C/180°C fan assisted/gas mark 6. Be careful not to overbake and once done, transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Fun pitta bread pizzas

(serves 4-6)

Kids love pizza, and our recipe makes a delicious, healthier and bitesize version. This recipe not only lets your little chefs get creative with different ingredients (you can even let them choose), but it promotes healthier choices and helps them tap into a world of alternative dishes inspired by family classics.

If you’re looking for easy recipes for children that take very little time, yet give them a satisfying and nutritional meal, stock up on pitta bread. Because you can freeze pitta, you’ll be able to rustle this up anytime you want. Opt for wholemeal pitta to add more wholegrains to their diet.

Pitta Pizzas

Ingredients

  • 6 wholemeal pitta breads
  • 175g tomato puree
  • 250g mixed peppers (chopped)
  • 200g mushrooms (sliced)
  • 170g cherry tomatoes (quartered)
  • 125g medium cheddar (grated)
  • 100g sweetcorn (drained from tin)
  • ½ iceberg lettuce (shredded)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan assisted/gas mark 6 and cut all the pittas in half horizontally.
  2. Place pitta halves cut-side down on a baking tray and spread the puree over them.
  3. Top with peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, sweetcorn and cheddar. Arrange in funny faces to make them more appealing and let your kids do this bit to keep it interactive.
  4. Cook in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling.
  5. Let cool slightly then serve the pitta pizza with shredded lettuce on the side.

Asian summer rolls

(serves 4-8)

If your kids love eating spring rolls when you get a takeaway, they will be just as excited by the non-fried version. Made with rice paper, these rolls are made by simply wrapping around your favourite meat or veggie ingredients. For that extra bounce and texture when biting into them, some vermicelli rice noodles are a delicious finishing touch. One of the easiest, healthiest kid-friendly recipes out there, and one that always impresses at parties - summer rolls should be added to every family’s recipe book.

Our recipe is made with king prawns and chicken and serves between 4-8 people, depending on how hungry your little ones are.

Asian Summer Rolls

Ingredients

  • 50g rice noodles
  • 8 rice paper wraps
  • 1 carrot (peeled)
  • 1 avocado (peeled and de-stoned)
  • ¼ cucumber
  • 8 king prawns (peeled and cooked)
  • ½ chicken breast (cooked and shredded)
  • Sweet chilli sauce

Method

  1. Cook the noodles in a pan of water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3 mins or until they are ‘al dente’ (or to your liking). Take off the heat, cool under running water and drain.
  2. With the noodles set aside, chop your carrot into thin matchsticks and do the same with the cucumber. Slice the avocado into similar size strips.
  3. Set all your ingredients out on the counter, including the prepped chicken and prawns.
  4. To start assembling, soak the rice paper one at a time in a bowl of water until it goes transparent and floppy. Lift out of the water and place flat on a chopping board.
  5. Place the chopped vegetables, avocado, chicken and prawns in the middle, before folding up the bottom. Fold in the sides and start rolling until you get to the end. The wet rice paper will seal easily.
  6. Leave to set and dry at room temperature. Repeat with all the remaining rice paper.
  7. Serve on a sharing board with a sweet chilli dip.

Fruity frozen yoghurt bites

(serves 12)

Not only is this recipe super easy to make for all ages, but it can be done with some very basic ingredients, many of which will be in your fridge already. It’s also an appealing summer snack, perfect for cooling children down on a hot day.

This is superb if you want easy recipes for kids that can be done in a rush, and enjoyed anytime. They keep well in the freezer and will curb cravings without spoiling dinner. For healthy kid-friendly recipes that can be made with any fruits (not just the ones on this list), you can’t go wrong with frozen yoghurt bites!

Fruity frozen yoghurt bites

Ingredients

  • 50g strawberries
  • 40g mango (peeled and de-stoned)
  • 40g pineapple (peeled)
  • 1 kiwi fruit (halved)
  • 500g Greek yogurt
  • 1½ tbsp fruit coulis (store-bought)

Method

  1. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake cases. Meanwhile, chop the fruit into bite-size pieces (you can let little ones do this with a butter knife) and do the same with the kiwi after scooping out the flesh from the two halves.
  2. Set fruit aside and start adding yoghurt to the cupcake cases. Each case should be a third full.
  3. Using a teaspoon, drop little dots of the coulis on the top of the yoghurt then swirl to create a pretty pattern. Add the chopped fruit pieces on top.
  4. Place the muffin tray in the freezer for at least 2 ½ hours (or until completely frozen).
  5. Serve in the cases or remove and transfer to a plate.
